About the animal:

Lysander (given by the shelter and meaning “one who is freed”) is a sweet, sensitive, cautious, quirky old man who we adopted 1.5 years ago. He is about 10-12 years old and weighs about 20 pounds. It was clear he was not properly cared for based on his condition but has really bloomed in a safe and consistent home environment. He currently lives with another adult dog. He loves his on and off-leash walks, though he maxes out at about 30 minutes, and is happy curling up on his heating pad or a sun patch outside or near the window. He’s got an adorably quirky attitude and really makes us laugh. Predictability and consistency is key, and he would best be suited in a quiet, low-traffic single home.

We have come to the very difficult decision to re-home Lysander in hopes that he can live out his final years in peace. He has a history of snapping when scared or threatened and while we may manage these behaviors with gates and crates, we are expecting our first child in July and cannot risk the chance of an encounter between a curious infant and a fearful dog.

Our dream is to find a home with an experienced, gentle owner who can see past these behaviors and understand that he is just a nervous baby boy whose first 10 years of life must have been tough. He would be a wonderful addition to a mellow home looking for a mellow companion to enjoy the finer things in life – leisurely strolls, gardening, and curling up by the fire with a good book. He would be fine alone or with another low energy, older dog and I imagine he would be fine with cats too.

We are committed to finding him the best fit and would send him off with all the supplies he would need to make a smooth transition. We would also be happy to get a vet to evaluate his health and ensure there are no known health issues. We really just want the very best for him and are hopeful that there’s someone who can provide him the love and security he craves to live out his last years in peace and happiness.
